Fundamental of polymer materials, including organic chemistry, polymerization, and molecular structure of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers. Four modes of mechanical deformation of polymers: glassy, viscoelastic, rubbery, viscous. Properties of polymers different than ceramics and metals, including behavior above and below glass transition temperature and time dependent properties (creep/stress relaxation). Polymer processing techniques, including injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming. Hands-on lab techniques to measure properties; design projects using data to inform material selection.
