Early African American Authorship (ENG-0038)

Exploration of works from the first century of African American writing. Readings range from Phillis Wheatley's poetry from the 18th century through Charles Chestnutt's fiction at the turn of the 20th century. Reflections on why African American literature is so deeply invested in the problems of authorship authentication, self-fashioning, dissembling, and personae.
