Ovid And The Ovidian Tradition (ENG-0109)

Close readings of Ovid's Metamorphoses, a bible of pagan mythology for later poets, and also his erotic poems, which explore the pathos and comedy of love, and invent an extraordinarily influential psychological vocabulary. Also a study of the Ovidian tradition, including two French works in translation, the Roman de la Rose and Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and a number of shorter works in English, by such authors as Chaucer, Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Spenser.
