Color and Critical Inquiry (PAI-0140)

Focus on the visual and aesthetic interactions of color in painting, the science of color perception, cultural contexts and metaphysical nature of color perception. This course offers a three-pronged approach to the study of color. 1. We will concentrate on fundamental properties of color and the dynamics of color interaction on two-dimensional surfaces. 2. Through projects/readings/slide talks, we will trace the roots of color use and color theories through the history of artistic practices. 3. We will explore the phenomenology of color as evidenced by its pivotal role in the evolution of biology, language, and culture. Prerequisite: PAI 03, PAI 06 or PAI 10, or by permission of the instructor. For intermediate and advanced level students.
