Shakespeare's Rome (CLS-0145)

Study of Shakespeare’s Rape of Lucrece, Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, and Antony and Cleopatra in light of his classical sources, Plutarch and Livy. The reasons for Rome’s greatness and the causes of its decline; ancient Rome as a model of civic participation; the demands of Roman virtue; the role of women in a martial regime; the place of philosophy in the city; and the effect of the regime on the character of individuals. Examination of the question whether Shakespeare diverges from his classical sources to come to an independent judgment of Rome. Recommendations: PS 41, PS 42, CLS 32, or CLS 38
