Media, Culture, and Society (FMS-0043)

Focuses on the relationship between media, culture, and power in society. Examination of the complex interactions between media technologies, cultural goods, those who create them, those who consume them, and the social context in which these relationships are embedded. Students use a sociological lens as they explore the role that media users, texts, and industries play in maintaining/reproducing as well as in resisting/eroding existing social inequalities. Topics relate to the United States and may include the relationship between production and content, influencers, digital harassment, struggles over visibility and representation, consumer culture, the political information landscape, and cultural stratification and taste.
