War and Terrorism (CVS-0017)

Examination of possible justifications of the use of violence and of moral constraints on the conduct of war. Topics include whether combatants bear moral responsibility for fighting, whether terrorism is always wrong, and how are we to understand pacifism as an alternative to violence. Commonly held assumptions about war and terrorism will be scrutinized. Readings from Walzer, Fanon, Clausewitz, Gandhi, Che Guevara, and Mao.
