Exclusionary Education: History, Law, & Policy (ED-0173)

The early history of education in the United States and the evolution of public education for all students. Federal laws that protect students from discrimination on the bases of race, national origin, color, language, and disability, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and its amendments, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, their implementing regulations, and case law. Discussion of how intersectional identities lead to students’ unique experiences of discrimination, oppression, and marginalization in K-12 schools and current barriers to inclusive education. Engagement in practical classroom exercises and with working professionals.
