From Instagram feeds to TikTok, our society is obsessed with representing a cultivated first-person narrative to the world. The epistolary novel fictionalizes representation versus reality using a first-person narrative. Truth and lies in the epistolary genre and how French authors play with the first-person narrative of letters to define women’s place in society. Focus on the formal and thematic development of the epistolary genre, or “letter novels,” read against a social and historical background, stretching from the reign of Louis XIV through the French Revolution to Francophone women’s writing in the 20th century.
