Creative Activism: Emerg Tech (GRA-0112)

Spring 2024 · GRA 0112 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate

Explore the power of public activism through web-based design interventions and documentary-inspired storytelling. Consider the responsibility of designers to subvert, amplify, resist, intervene, disobey, and protest in favor of principles that matter on both a personal and public level. Develop criteria for successful acts of social resistance through projects on the web and in augmented reality, while considering aspects of community-based co-creation, as well as AI. Readings and class lectures will include, but are not limited to, the works of: The Center for Artistic Activism, artist Nancy Baker Cahill, poet/computer scientist Joy Buolamwini, internet performance artist Molly Soda, and activist/designer Sasha Costanza-Chock. Demos will cover free and open-source software. Some web-based design experience and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud is helpful.
