Survey of Eastern Europe from the 19th century through the present, with a focus on the late Habsburg and Ottoman empires and their successor states in East-Central Europe and the Balkans. Topics may include the Habsburg and Ottoman empires and their collapse, the rise of nationalism, anti-Semitism, emigration from Eastern Europe, World War I and the creation of independent countries in East-Central Europe and the Balkans, interwar fascist regimes and Czechoslovakia’s experiment with democracy, World War II and the Holocaust, postwar ethnic cleansing, life under communism, the collapse of communism, the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, the expansion of the European Union, and the recent rise of illiberal governments in the region.
