Introduction to Modern Sculpture (VMS-0024)

Overview of sculpture between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. Considers global examples to examine visual and material responses to industrialization and its impact on the self and collectivity. Observes diverse artists' shifting perceptions of identity and society; time and matter; nature and rurality; mechanization and violence. Analyzes and contextualizes the bodies of work of a few sculptors per week. Exposes students to a range of sources (images, artist statements, interviews, exhibition reviews, curatorial texts, films on art and scholarly essays) to construct evidence-based interpretations that consider multiple perspectives. Open to all levels.
