Focuses on Afro-Brazilian artwork in the MFA Axelrod collection. Considers the history and historiography of Afro-Brazilian visual culture and art and its links to religion and popular culture. Looks at Afro-Brazilian and Afro-American art in comparative ways. Analysis of modes of display and how to approach works of art in a museum context. Classes at SMFA and MFA to examine original works.
