Biomedical Concepts at the Tissue, Organ and Systems Scales II (BME-0045)

Fall 2024 · BME 0045 · Tufts University · 5 credits · Undergraduate

Mechanics of solids, lever systems and moments as applied to bones, joints and muscles; linear and nonlinear circuit theory as applied to computational models of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems; mechanics of fluid flow through pipes as applied to vessels and airways; work and thermodynamic cycles as applied to pressure-volume systems of the heart and lungs; and basic control systems theory as applied to regulation of mean arterial pressure in the cardiovascular system. Applications to the musculoskeletal system, motor neurons, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the lymphatic system, metabolism, the renal system and the digestive system. Instruction using a mix of didactic lectures, case studies, experimental/computational labs and clinical/industrial presentations and visits. Prerequisites: BME 44
