Prosthetics and Orthotics (DPT-0728)

This course provides a foundation for decision making and interprofessional practice relating to the recommendation for and use/modification of orthoses and prostheses in physical therapy practice. Concepts of orthotic and prosthetic device materials, design, fabrication, and technology are introduced. The course will emphasize physical therapy examination, assessment, plan of care development and modification, and outcomes specific to the patient requiring or having orthotic and prosthetic devices. Principles of gait analysis, limb amputation, wearing/fitting of orthoses and prostheses, education, the importance of therapeutic alliance and interprofessional collaboration, and the psychosocial considerations of the patient with orthotic and prosthetic devices are implicit in this course.
