Book Arts: Chapter 1 (GRA-0032)

Learn the basics of building a book and how the design of its structure informs a narrative. In class demonstrations will include book binding from Western and Eastern traditions. Students are encouraged to develop personal projects that explore visual narratives through the form of the book. Project assignments focus on experimentation in text and image relationships and the design of the page. Trips to the SMFA library to study from our wide collection of contemporary artist’s books will inform the students’ understanding of the place of this sculptural medium has in contemporary art and art publishing. Beginning level, open to all.
