Latinx Art and Visual Culture (HAA-0086)

Study of the visual art and culture produced by artists identified as Latinx or with one of the historical Latin-American descended communities in the United States. Emphasis given to the visual arts associated with the Chicano Movement and the Puerto Rican community in New York, with shorter units on Cuban-American, Dominican-American, and other U.S. and global diasporic communities. Afro- and Indigenous-identified Latinx artists and their invisibility within the term and concept Latinx. Analysis contextualized in terms of social movements, demographic shifts, and ongoing debates about immigration, national security, social justice, and equity. Topics include the relationship of contemporary Latinx art and artists to the mainstream art world ecosystem, debates about visual art as a vehicle for social change, decolonial aesthetics, the role of gender, sexuality, race, class, and ethnicity in creative expression, and how self-representation informs political participation and/or dissent.
