Partial Differential Equations I (MATH-0255)

The theory of the Laplace, heat, and wave equations: Fundamental solutions, mean-value formulas, properties of solutions, Green's functions, energy methods, Duhamel's principle. Quasilinear first-order PDEs, including the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, the method of characteristics, hyperbolic conservation laws and systems thereof, shocks and entropy conditions. Other selected topics. Prerequisites: Math 51 or 153, Math 135, and graduate standing; or permission of instructor.
