Obj. Lessons/ Jewelry in Context (MTL-0146)

Fall 2024 · MTL 0146 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate

From friendship bracelets to family heirlooms, everyone has a story to share about jewelry. Making accessible an art form often perceived as exclusive, this class connects historical makers, ideas, and techniques to contemporary practice. Students move between lectures and studio practice to combine intensive research with experimentation. Learning continues outside the classroom as students explore Boston-area museum collections and visit artist studios around the world. Weekly themes range from sparkle to communication design to objects of faith and belief and examine the deep and meaningful ways that jewelry is created, appreciated, and functions in the world. Non-SMFA students and MAT Art Education students will receive a letter grade.
