The purpose of this course is to orientate international baccalaureate-prepared occupational therapists who plan to practice in the US to the US health system and to assist them develop their plan for the educational equivalency (OTED) process so that they can to be accepted to sit for the national Occupational Therapy board exam through National Board Certification for Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Completing a post-professional Masters degree and passing this exam is necessary in order to acquire the OTR credentials needed to apply for a state license to practice, and for the eventual first therapy employment position in the U.S. The educational equivalency (OTED) process is a complex multi-step endeavor, involves multiple stakeholders, and during which, the student is often met with ‘delinquencies’ noted in the equivalency process that must be satisfied with additional educational evidence in subsequent uploads into the OTED portal. This course will review the role of occupational therapy in the US healthcare system, provide initial scaffolding of the requirements for the OTED process, assist students to develop a tracking process for the educational evidence that will eventually be uploaded into their exam application, and assist in identifying educational gaps.
