Origins of Islamic Political Thought (PS-0143)

The development of political philosophy in the Islamic world, from its earliest articulations through the great debates that raged between the 9th and 14th centuries on issues such as the respective spheres of human reason and divine law, the relationship between the individual and the polis, and the proper conduct of warfare. Writings of thinkers including al-Farabi, Ibn Rushd, and Ibn Khaldun and their legacies in contemporary Islamic political thought. Prerequisite: PS 41
