Mapping the Latin American Metropolis (SPN-0159)

Focusing on the city through fiction and film, an exploration of the process of urban modernization in Latin America. Analysis of the distinct cultural and political transformations Latin American cities have undergone, and how those changes have been represented in film, literature, and music. Topics can range from the building of Tenochtitlán to the Latinization of the United States. Readings may include works by César Aira, Angel Rama, Clarice Lispector and Fernando Vallejo, among others, as well as several films by Brazilian, Mexican, and Cuban directors. Prerequisite: Two 30-level courses or consent. Conducted in Spanish.
