Evolution of Heroic Figure (SPN-0176)

Tracing the evolution of the heroic figure in early modern Spanish prose, poetry, and drama. Examination of the development of the hero as a prototype whose representation reflects the social, historic, and cultural circumstances of the period. Gendered representations as well as counterculture models of heroic behavior will be considered. Focus on identifying the compelling and uniquely Hispanic conceptualization of heroism during the Golden Age of Spanish literary production. Readings may include works by Garcilaso de la Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, and María de Zayas. Conducted in Spanish. Recommendations: Two level-30 Spanish courses or consent of the instructor.
