Fieldwork Methods in Music, Sound, and Culture (ANTH-0154)

Experiential and critical approach to ethnographic field research in the arts and humanities. Hands-on learning assignments in project design, participant-observation, field note taking, interview techniques, audio-visual documentation, and ethnographic writing. Ethics of knowledge production, complexities of self-other relations, and awareness of implicit bias. Decolonial, collaborative, and multimodal methodologies. Strategies for creating written, visual, and multimedia representations of music, sound, and embodied cultural expressions, and their entanglements with social issues. Recommendations: Major or minor in Anthropology or in Music, Sound, and Culture, or graduate standing, or instructor permission.
