Atomic Scale Structure and Properties of Surfaces (CHEM-0138)

Foundational concepts relevant to surface and interfacial chemistry, with a focus on solid surfaces. Topics include surface and adsorbate structure (both geometric and electronic), adsorbate bonding motifs (including chemisorption and physisorption), thermodynamics, kinetics and dynamics of adsorption and reaction, heterogeneous catalysis, and impacts of surface modification on reactivity. Prerequisite: Chemistry 31 or instructor's consent.
