Experimental Filmmaking: Concept to Practice (FMS-0019)

Exploration of experimental filmmaking techniques and practices as an alternative outlet to the commercial film industry. Various traditions from the cinematic avant-garde, including experimental film as medium for personal expression, as exploration of film form, or as critique of mass media and culture. Introduction to the tactile nature of film with the use of 16mm Bolex cameras and DIY cameraless filmmaking techniques. Screenings of notable work, readings, and discussions of contemporary film issues, as well as visiting artists lectures will provide additional context needed to engage with experimental film communities, film festivals, and exhibition spaces locally and abroad. Production of a project through in-class workshops, culminating in a class screening at the end of the semester. Prerequisites: FMS 1 or instructor permission.
