Material Culture in China (HIST-0137)

Interdisciplinary study of material culture and everyday life in Chinese history. Examination of how political, ethnic, religious, and gender identities have been constructed and shaped by the production and consumption of material artifacts ranging from household goods and tomb objects to built forms and bodily dispositions. Case studies include food, tea culture, textiles, clothing and fashion, urban space, architecture and gardens, furniture, vernacular painting, printing and publishing, and burial.
