Modern European Intellectual History (HIST-0165)

An intellectual history of modern Europe from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries as framed within the competing and complementary legacies of the enlightenment and romantic movements. Investigates the histories of socialism, psychoanalytic theory, nationalism and internationalism, pacifism, futurism and fascism, feminism, existentialism, and decolonization. Ends with ecocriticism and questions about ethics and ideas in the European Union. Readings will include Marx, Kollontai, Freud, Tolstoy, Benjamin, Beauvoir, Fanon, and others.
