Photo 1: Film & Darkroom (PHTM-0063)

Provides fundamental knowledge/experience with black & white photographic processes. Emphasis on enabling students to think visually and develop a personal way of seeing with the camera. Focus on the tradition of photography, making pictures with a 35mm camera, film development and the craft of darkroom printing. Weekly demonstrations/ assignments develop the necessary techniques to produce quality negatives and prints. Assignments challenge students to learn to see photographically. On-going group discussion and critiques, historical and critical context for photography, examples of artists’ work and scholarly readings are essential class components. One long-term project presented on the final day.
