Examination of a series of masterpieces by filmmakers from "the other Europe": the Soviet Union/Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and the former Yugoslav territories. Explores the role of film in terms of its artistic achievements and social commentary: As a tool in the transition to the new Soviet order; as an alternative means of expression during censorship; and, more recently, as a corrective tool in fragile new democracies and a voice of protest fighting against new forms of oppression.
