The dominance of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian in the sixteenth century. Consideration of the High Renaissance in Florence and Rome and its aftermath, Mannerism, in Catholic courts across Europe. The development of art history as a discipline in conjunction with the rise of academies, art collecting, and the search for elevated status. The challenge of women artists such as Sofonisba Anguissola to prevailing notions of creativity. Extra reading assignments and term paper. (Also offered as lower-level.)
