The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: History, Narratives and Current Key Issues (DHP-D224)

Fall 2025 · DHP D224 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

This seminar has three major goals: first, to examine the way in which the history of Israel and Palestine has been narrated, with particular emphasis on the distinct and competing lenses through which Israelis and Palestinians have observed their relationship and the resulting conflict; second, to examine some of the contested terms and concepts that are often used when discussing this conflict, particularly since October 7th 2023, and to analyze the political and social context in which they emerged; and third, to review the largely unsuccessful efforts to achieve a negotiated solution to the conflict, try to understand the causes of the repeated failures, and investigate new ways of thinking about the conflict and its future, based on new approaches that have been advanced in recent years. Students will serve as active participants in their own learning by examining their own ideas with experts on the topic and with people who have participated in negotiations in various rounds of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
