Explores major figures in the American literary, political, and philosophical movement known as Transcendentalism: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman. Major themes and topics include nature, religion, reform, and the place of the individual in society. Discussions of Emerson and Thoreau focus on the role played by transcendentalism in abolitionism, and, later, the civil rights and environmental movements. Readings from Fuller's Woman in the Nineteenth Century explore her critique of restrictive gender roles. Whitman's poetry grounds a consideration of race, sexuality, and citizenship. Fulfills the pre-1860 requirement for majors. Recommendations: ENG 1, 2 or Fulfillment of College Writing Requirement.Recommended that the student already have taken either ENG 20,21,22, or 23.
