Music in Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque European cultures. Topics include the development of music notation; chant and liturgy in cathedrals and convents; songs of courtly love; African musicians in pre-modern Europe; Jewish and Islamic influences; music printing and amateur performance; the birth of opera; the rise of instrumental genres and concerts. Hands-on course featuring beautiful rare books held in Tufts Library Special Collections. Ability to read notated music is required.
