Gender and Intersectionality in Humanitarian Assistance (NUTR-ON222)

Equality, equity and the empowerment of women, girls, men and boys in all their diversity are human rights imperatives and essential requirements for effective and just humanitarian action. In this course, students will learn the central international laws, standards and polices underpinning gender equitable humanitarian assistance. They will become skilled at applying gender and intersectional analysis to understand how diversity affects people in humanitarian crises. Intersectional components students in this class engage with include sex, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, urban-rural, class/caste and diverse sexual identities and expressions. Students will be learn how to recognize, understand and take into account in their practice societal power dynamics and gender and intersectional inequality before, during and after crises. They will recognize and respond to different gender and intersectional needs and identify the potential for inequitable access to resources and services in ways that help them design interventions that are equitable and uphold human rights. Students will be able to facilitate the leadership and contribution of crises affected populations in all their diversity in the planning, implementation, monitoring and learning from response strategies. In all of these areas, students will develop themselves as leaders in equitable, human rights-based humanitarian assistance. Students will learn how to undertake gender and intersectional data collection and analysis, use gender markers and engage in rapid gender analyses. Through knowledge and application students will learn to use gender and intersectional analysis to inform humanitarian assistance in the seven main humanitarian sectors: livelihoods and cash transfers, health, nutrition, water and sanitation, food security, education, shelter and protection. We will use AI in this class.
