Journalisms and Freedoms of Expression (ANTH-0133)

Explores anthropological approaches to journalism, free expression, and the circulation of truth across cultural and political systems. Examines how participation in public discourse is culturally regulated and how freedoms of expression are defined in diverse contexts. Considers theoretical perspectives on publics alongside ethnographies of national and community news, foreign correspondence, and photojournalism. Topics include the role of emotion and style in shaping public debate, the evolution of liberal democratic norms in journalism, and the ways geopolitical hierarchies are reproduced within global media fields.
