Astrophysics Laboratory (AST-0051)

Aims at developing and strengthening data analysis skills and expertise through astronomy-based projects. Practical applications of numerical methods (root finding, interpolation, integration, random number generation), statistics and probability (Bayes’ theorem, probability distributions, Bayesian inference, Monte Carlo generators), error analysis and propagation, and data fitting. Projects in astronomy using data from major national facilities and computer analysis of data. For students with a background in physics and/or astronomy and/or mathematics and/or computer sciences. Prerequisite: Math 34. Recommendations: Introductory course to computer science, or consent from instructor. May also be taken at the 100 level.
