Uncovering the Past: Historical Soc in Digital Age (DH-0118)

Compares sociological and historical approaches to uncovering and interpreting traces of the past. Examines challenges of research in a digital world, including the ethics and politics of archives. Focuses on critical reading, analytical writing, and research strategies: locating and analyzing primary documents and oral histories; leveraging text recognition, retrieval, and data cleaning; conducting press reviews in the era of AI; and using big data to measure culture and trends. Introduces tools and methods for organizing and analyzing qualitative data. Considers the future of historiography and historical sociology in a globalized, digital world.
