Children in Conflict and Crises: Protection and Resiliance (DHP-D240)

Spring 2026 · DHP D240 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

This course examines the intersections of childhood, gender, violence, protection, and resilience across conflict, humanitarian crises, and development contexts. Drawing on key theories, concepts, and frameworks, and employing a thematic and case study–based approach, the course provides a critical grounding in definitions and debates surrounding “the child,” “childhood,” child protection, children’s rights, and resilience. Using gender and intersectional analyses, students explore a range of issues affecting children globally, including nutrition and health in contexts of adversity; child labor and slavery; children living and working on the streets; migration, displacement, and resettlement; early and forced marriage; children’s involvement in political violence and armed conflict; and ethical and methodological considerations in conducting research with children. Throughout the course, students apply gender- and intersectionality-informed frameworks to analyze child protection challenges and strategies across diverse development and crisis settings. As part of the course, students will complete United Nations’ training on Protection and Child Protection and receive United Nations certificates.
