Adv. Field Research Methods in Fragile Contexts (DHP-D245M)

Spring 2026 · DHP D245M · Tufts University · 1.5 credits · Undergraduate

This course provides graduate students with the theoretical, methodological, and practical tools for conducting research with vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations in challenging environments, including conflict-affected, crisis-affected, or politically sensitive contexts. Drawing on relevant theories, frameworks, and case studies, students will explore the ethical, logistical, and safety considerations involved in gathering data in environments where research participants and teams may face risks. The course emphasizes ethical research design, including strategies to protect participants and researchers, and the special considerations required when working with populations under heightened protection, such as children affected by violence or deprivation. Students will engage with methods for investigating sensitive topics, including gender-based and sexual violence in fragile states, and for accessing marginalized or hard-to-reach groups, such as armed groups or populations living under their control, sexual and gender minorities, and people with disabilities. The course also addresses conducting research under constraints, such as restricted access due to conflict, natural disasters, or mobility limitations. Through hands-on exercises, students will develop a research project that includes designing a security plan, navigating institutional review board (IRB) requirements, and applying best practices for ethical and safe field research. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to carry out rigorous, responsible, and context-sensitive research in challenging environments.
