Corruption: Concepts, Causes, Consequences, Countermeasures (DHP-D261)

Spring 2026 · DHP D261 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

Corruption exists in almost every country in the contemporary world. It is common ground that corruption harms the rule of law, demoralizes the society, and inhibits economic growth, as there is a strong interaction between corruption and political and economic development. This raises the question of how to successfully contain and counter corruption. The institutional/legal, political, economic and even cultural contexts, within which corruption appears as a phenomenon, in the form of human behavior, constitute an constantly changing framework, at international and national level, that sets always new challenges – as new forms of corruption – throughout the globe. Addressing these challenges in a manner, both at international and national/comparative level, that will explore corruption’s dimensions (its concept, causes, forms, and consequences) allows for the identification of the possible anti-corruption measures in a preventive and/or a punishing approach.
