Drawing Foundation (DRW-0035)
Spring 2026 · DRW 0035 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate
Drawing is an ancient and universal practice as well as an aspect of visual thinking. Working from direct and indirect observations, students will develop the confidence to evaluate shape, line quality, value, composition, and how the critical choice of materials will impact an idea. Drawing Foundations introduces drawing as a practice of observation. We approach the illusion of space and form through formal analysis and subjective interpretation. Foundations examines the multiple functions of drawing across time and culture as well as emphasizing the breadth of the drawing experience and its application across disciplines. The course provides a format for a focused exploration of drawing practice as an instrument of communication, a source of ideas and an opportunity to risk and move beyond one's current abilities and notions. Non-SMFA students will receive a letter grade.
