Quantitative Economic Growth (EC-0118)

A rigorous treatment of various theoretical models of economic growth while emphasizing the link between theory and empirics. Are poor countries catching up with rich countries in terms of per capita income? Which policies promote economic development and which do not? Topics include capital accumulation models of growth, the role of technology in sustaining long-run growth, linear regression approaches to uncovering important growth determinants, issues in robustness and specification uncertainty, and the influence of "fundamentals" like institutions, geography, population diversity, and culture on development. Prerequisites: Economics 13 and 18. In no case may a student receive credit for both Economics 116 and Economics 118.
