Business and Political Risk in a Polarized World (EIB-B255)

Spring 2026 · EIB B255 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

Global firms increasingly face complex political environments marked by polarization, regulatory fragmentation, and the erosion of liberal economic norms. “Divisive times” — from populist nationalism to green industrial policy rivalries — amplify corporate political risk. This course examines how multinational firms assess and respond to these risks. In this course we explore how companies navigate regulatory divergence between the EU and the U.S., handle the politicization of ESG and DEI, and respond to sanctions, conflict, and trade disputes. The course combines theoretical frameworks from international business and comparative political economy with real-world corporate cases. Emphasis is placed on managerial decision-making under uncertainty, business risk, reputational challenges, and stakeholder pressures. Students will engage in case discussion, debates, and short analytical memos to apply insights to practice. The goal is to equip students with the analytical and ethical tools to manage political risk strategically and responsibly in an era of polarization.
