Milton (ENG-0114)

Spring 2026 · ENG 0114 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

All the English poems of Milton, together with Areopagitica and the Tractate on Education, are read. Comus, Lycidas, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes are studied in detail as distinctive works of art. The evolution of Milton's thought and poetic genius is considered in relation both to his biography and to the forces of Renaissance humanism, Christian liberalism, and political individualism, which made the age a period of rapid evolution.
