Analysis of potential harm caused by user interaction of technology in various domains including medical, consumer, industrial products. Fundamentals of use error (human error). Identifying opportunities for use error and their likelihood and potential to cause serious harm or death. Methods for identifying root causes of use errors. Residual risk analysis. Rationales for product design acceptance in view of residual risk and societal tolerance for risk. Applications to human factors engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, software development, and industrial design. Governmental expectations and industrial standards on risk management. Focus placed on medical technology. Prior coursework in human factors engineering preferred but not necessary.
