New Narratives of the Maghreb (FR-0139)

How contemporary social and political dynamics in the Maghreb are reflected and shaped aesthetically through literature, film, and (social) media. Focusing on Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, analysis of contemporary Maghrebi media, politics, and social movements through key cultural productions. Discussion topics include postcolonial legacy, Algeria’s “Black Decade” and “Revolution of Smiles,” Morocco’s transition following the “Years of Lead,” and Tunisia’s “Arab Spring" and its regional aftermaths. Blends media, cultural and postcolonial studies, with close readings of significant Maghrebi film, theatre, literature, pop culture, and digital media. Additional focus on Inter-Maghreb cultural ties as well as North Africa’s shifting relations with France. In French. Recommendations: 2 courses taught in French above FR22.
