Survey of German cultural and literary history from the 18th through the 21st centuries. Depending on the era and author, themes vary and include freedom and belonging, violence and horror, authority and alienation, joy and beauty, war and exile, trauma and the holocaust, oppression and rebellion, as well as multiculturalism and diversity. Readings include canonical texts by Goethe, Nietzsche, Kafka, and Sebald, among others. In English. No prerequisites.
