Topics include race, slavery, and resistance in the causes and consequences of the war; black, white, and indigenous military participation; the transition from slavery to freedom for men, women, and children; race, labor, and global capitalism; gender, kinship, and the transformation of plantation households; representations of the era in literature, film, and popular culture.
