Freedom of Speech (ILO-L202)

Spring 2026 · ILO L202 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

This seminar is an introduction to freedom of speech. It is intended for students with no legal background who study in all academic disciplines and fields of study. Its aim is to familiarize students with classical as well as contemporary reasons for and against protecting speech in various settings. The debate over these issues is timeless, raising profound questions concerning moral and political philosophy, culture, history, psychology and other disciplines. These arguments have been resolved differently from one age to another and from one legal system to another, embracing national governments as well as international organizations. But the competing values transcend any legal system and are much the same in each.
